Entries from December 2008
Thus far, my resolutions for 2009 will be:
- Carry smaller, lighter purses
- Drink more water
- De-clutter both life and home
- Get back in touch with friends I let slip through the cracks
- Volunteer
What are yours?
Happy New Year! Hope 2009 is good to you and yours!

Sometimes I like to go home for lunch and watch reruns of The O.C. at noon. I put my feet up, reheat last night’s leftovers and see what Ryan and Seth are up to. The best is when I have left over Chinese food that I can eat cold, from the carton, while I watch teenage drama. Don’t judge me.
On my ten minute drive back to work I realized I had a flat tire…because the car gods hate me. So there I was, calling CAA yet again to have them come help me out. CAA told me it was going to be a 2.5 hour wait so while I cursed my terrible luck with cars, I called one of the guys from work to come get me. When CAA did get there was a slow leak somewhere, it had to be taken to a garage to be resealed etc.
So there I was, annoyed by the car again, late for my afternoon meeting, thinking of the errands I needed to run, and in search of a chauffer to drive me to the mechanic/home and just pissed off with all cars in general when I got an email that put everything into perspective for me.
A family friend of mine has twin daughters, they are sixteen months old as of last week. One was diagnosed with leukemia yesterday.

It’s the first real snowstorm of winter! Woooooohoooo!
It’s beginning to look alot like Christmas! La la la la! I’m going to bake some cookies and get Boyfriend to build a snowman with me tomorrow! I am feeling the need for hot chocolate, freshly baked cookies and cozying up on the sofa with a good book while the world gets covered in white fluff!
I might regret this later (when I have to drive somewhere)…but for now…let it snow let it snow let it snow!

The malls are full, there’s no parking and we all have gifts to buy, wrap and exchange. There’s an old saying…’tis better to give than to receive.
In some cases it proves especially true…like when it comes to giving versus receiving blood. It’s a much better situation to be healthy and able and take the opportunity to help someone else than to be on the receiving end of a blood transfusion.
In the spirit of giving, please make a blood donation. (Especially if you’re an “O” blood type, the universal donor, people need you!) One pint of blood can save three people’s lives. Donating blood takes literally about fifteen minutes, you can take a mini power nap while it happens! It will be the most hassle free gift you give this season…no long lines at the cash register, no wrapping, no lugging it home, no worries that the recipient won’t like it. And if you’re afraid of needles? Perhaps you can donate financially, even $5 can make a difference.

You know how they say you can choose your friends but not your family? Or something along those lines?
Well why the hell not? It just isn’t right.

It’s not that we’re don’t appreciate the offer Ralph, really and truly, it was nice of you to think of us when you wanted to offload the Buffalo Bills…but…after Sunday’s game…we’re not so sure we want them. It’s not personal exactly…just more that we already have enough less than stellar teams in Toronto. So, if its all the same to you, perhaps you can just keep your three point scoring team there. Really. We’re full here. Maybe the knowledge that you want to get rid of them is affecting their performance; maybe it makes them feel unwanted. Even big huge guys who violently knock down other big huge guys down for millions of dollars have feelings you know. Try being a little nicer…tuck them in at night if you have to, get them new teddy bears and don’t ever let Kreesha Turner sing an anthem again.
Their eardrums were obviously in pain, still bleeding, and they were unable to hear any of the calls made by the coaching staff. She can’t sing any better than I can but the difference between her and I would be that I am aware of this fact and therefore restrict my attempts at “singing” to my car when I am alone. Nobody else needs to be tortured by that. She was FOUR WORDS into the anthem when she messed up.
Canadians are pretty laid back, when we sing with the anthem its more of an indistinct murmur throughout the crowd. It’s not so common for 50,000 Canadians to get together and YELL at the top of their lungs to drown out the voice of a girl in clown makeup.
So Ralph, feel free to take your Bills home and because we wouldn’t want you to leave without a party favor…you might find Kreesha on your bus too. Maybe she throws a ball better than she sings.
BTW, good news: The Saints WON!

Months and months ago, I pinched my sciatic nerve. In the months between that and now I’ve been going to physio, doctor’s appointments, getting far too many x-rays, a CT scan and (until my chiropractor went to Africa to find himself) chiro appointments.
On Tuesday the Orthopedic surgeon told me there wasn’t going to be a need for surgery but that I should consider swimming in hopes that that will ease the tension on my spine. He told me I could go back to the gym and I could do cardio but under no circumstances should I lift weights or run. (Seriously? Me? Run? Never, not unless something is chasing me and I have nowhere to hide.) He also said since I had been functioning with minimum pain without medication the last couple months I could stop taking the pills altogether.
The key phrase here was “no need for surgery” so I celebrated by going to the gym and power walking two miles. And when I came home I threw out the last of the pills because I didn’t have to take them anymore! Glory hallelujah!
By Wednesday afternoon my back was killllllllllllllling me.
I’ve been wearing low heeled shoes for months but on Wednesday I had to go home and change into those infernal ballet flats again. It was that bad. I think I need to go make a sacrifice to the gods of…something.
